So this is the Soundboks Mix, and jut like every other soundboks out there, the Mix is a super durable bluetooth speaker that also gets super loud for its size. Now, there are plenty of speakers out there that are very durable, portable and they get very louder for their size, but soundboks take it to a whole other level. So today we’re going to checkout the Soundboks Mix and we’re going to compare it to the Soundboks Go… what exactly is the difference here.
Regarding pricing, both the Soubdboks Go and Soundboks Mix have a retail price of $800, which is a lot, but with both of these speakers you are paying a premium for the added durability and max volume performance of these speakers. Now soundboks claims that the Mix isn’t the replacement for the Go… but it looks like the Mix is the replacement for the Go if you ask me. So first there’s the design of these speakers… now both the Soundboks Go and Soundboks Mix are very similar in size and weight cause they both weigh in at 22 pounds. Both of these speakers are also super durable… but they do have some key differences. For starters, the Mix has a steel grill on the front which you can easily remove like the Soundboks 4… which can be useful if you get any dirt behind your grill, where as with the Soundboks Go, it has a plastic grill on the front which can’t be removed as easily. Now both of these speakers are super portable, but if you want you can also use these speakers with a shoulder strap, but unfortunly these shoulder straps don’t come included with these speakers, which I don’t think is cool. But with the Mix, this speaker does have a top hat mount on the bottom so you can place it on a stand if you want, where as with the Go you can’t.
Now when it comes to battery life, these two speaker are using the same battery that you’ll find on all Soundbok’s. And with both of these speakers if you use them at 50% volume they are going to be good for 40 hours and at max volume they’re going to be good for about 8 hours. However battery life depends on how you use these speakers… if you use them with the Bass Plus EQ, that is going to drain your battery life faster.
And with both of these speakers you can quickly and easily swap out the battery if you want or need to… however these batteries are a little different in the way that you charge them. With the Go, you would get the previous battery that charged via the AC cable… and you would also get a complete charging cable included… which is what we expect. Where as with the Soundboks Mix, you get the updated battery that charges via a USB C port, which is super convenient. However you do not get the charging cable included. Now you can use your own USB C cable… however you’re going to need at least a 65 watt charger to properly charge this battery. If you were to use a common 20 watt charger from apple, then its going to take a while to charge this battery up. So overall I think its cool that you can now charge this new battery with a USB C cable… but having the charging cable sold separately is another draw back compared to the Soundboks Go. And also keep in mind that this USB C port is strictly used for charging the battery, you can’t use it to charge your own devices.
But then there are the ports on these speakers which is pretty weak for both of these speakers given their price and size, both of these speakers have is an audio jack, and that’s it. Unfortunately these speakers don’t have an XRL input like the Soundboks 4 nor do they have an audio out jack, so with these speakers you can’t plug in a microphone for kakroke, you can’t plug them into a mixer and you can’t even daisy chain them to other speakers. I really think the Mix should have had at least one XLR Input.
And when it comes to bluetooth connectivity, these speakers can only be connected with one device at a time, which ultimately is fine… but sharing this speaker with a friend isn’t as easy like with other speakers.
But with all of that out of the way, lets talk about sound. When it comes to speaker set ups, both of these speakers have a frontward firing woofer, a frontward firing tweeter and an exhaust port that shoots out the front. And with both of these speakers you can go into their apps and choose from a few pre made EQ’s or you can make your own. But now we’re going to go into the sound test. Both of these speakers are playing at 75% volume and we’re going to be using both of these speakers while in bass plus but were also going to use the mix with its indoors EQ which I think sounds best.
So when it comes to sound, these two speakers sound fairly different from one another… now I wouldn’t say that one speaker sounds better than the other, cause each one has their pros and cons. Now with both of these speakers, they like to lean towards a brighter sound signature cause the exhaust ports on both of these speakers shoot out the front, so the bass is more audible but it doesn’t have as much kick as like with a speaker that has an exhaust port that shoots out the back. Plus a brighter sound signature is better for a speaker for out doors use. Now I actually prefer the bass found on the Soundboks Go cause the bass on this speaker doesn’t over power the vocals even while in its bass plus mode. Where as with the Mix, I feel that this bass overpowers the mids and highs when its in bass plus mode, that’s why I prefer to use the Mix with its indoors Eq. But with the Mix, I do feel that this speaker sounds a little more balanced than the Go cause the highs aren’t as exajurated like with the Go which can sound a little tinny at times.
But when it comes to make volume performance, the Soundboks Go does get a little louder than the Mix. Now ultimately both of these speakers are going to be good for like a 20 person block party in uptown… but if you were to use both of these speakers side to side, you will notice that the Soundboks Go gets a little louder than the Mix. And overall, I think I prefer how the Soundboks Go sounds over how the Soundboks Mix go cause with this speaker you can get more kick in its bass thus giving you a fuller sound… where as with the Mix, it does sound a little more balanced by comparison… but I do end up missing that bass at higher volumes when compared to the Go.
But finally lets talk about pairing this speaker up with other speakers. Now with the both of these speakers, you can have a total of 5 speakers paired together. And the really cool thing about soundboks is that you can choose what channel each speaker plays. So if you just want them to all play in sync then you can just have them all play center… or if you want to get stereo going you can assign one to be your left and the other to be the right… or if you want you can even get a 3 channel set up if you’re a huge soundboks fan.
But with all of that being said, both the Soundboks Go and Soundboks Mix give you a lot of sound while in a small, portable and super durable package. Now the Mix does have some imporavments over the go, like a removable front steel grill, its battery now charges with a USB C cable, and the Mix sounds a little more balanced than the Go. But personally I prefer how the Go performs and sounds cause this speaker does get a little louder and the bass is a little more physical and doesn’t interfere with the rest of your music as much.
